Romashka

Romashka
New York, NY
www.romashka.net
Romashka is a driving force in New York City's burgeoning gypsy and balkan music scene, playing gypsy and folk music from Russia, Romania, the Balkans, and beyond.   Romashka's repertoire is a raucous mix of brassy dance beats, world-weary romances, vodka-inflected tangos and waltzes, and infectious originals.   Lithuanian-born singer Inna Barmash fronts a band of nine wildly versatile NY musicians, denizens of fertile downtown grounds, boasting a violin, viola, accordion, guitar, trumpet, tuba, and percussion.  The band was born in fits and torrents in the fall of 2003. Roaming from cafes and all-night jams, to apartment parties and subway stops, the band quickly catapulted to pulsating clubs and underground parties, drawing a loyal – and swiftly growing – following from downtown party revelers and outer-borough-dwelling ethnic communities alike.  Romashka released its first CD, "Romashka - Muzica for Dancing & Dreaming" in 2005 and is working toward its second release in the Fall of 2009.

Svitanya

Svitanya
Philadelphia, PA
www.svitanya.org

Some songs are modern arrangements of traditional folk tunes, some are original compositions in the folk tradition, and others are sung as they have been for generations. They range from strong and strident field-working songs to traditional dance tunes to lush and emotive arrangements, all evoking the timbres, rhythms, and harmonies indigenous to the region.

The Other Georgia

The Other Georgia

www.theothergeorgia.com
The Other Georgia is a Boston-based trio singing traditional three-part vocal harmony from the Republic of Georgia.  The pieces in their repertoire range widely in regions and themes – from liturgical chant to victory songs to lullabies.  Georgian music is sung in various configurations from a trio to a full choir.  The Other Georgia’s trio configuration allows for careful tuning and nimble movement of the pieces.

Which Way East

Which Way East
Brookly, NY
Which Way East

The goal of Which Way East is to explore the connections between Balkan traditional music and the contemporary music scene of New York City. From Plovdiv to Kingston, from cocek rhythms to stepper's beats, Which Way East speaks a musical dialect that is as comfortable in the concert hall as it is in the club and folk dance festival. Individually, the members of Which Way East have experience living and touring all over the world. They have studied and performed music in Turkey, Transylvania, Ghana, India, Malaysia, and China (to name a few). Which Way East began in Union Square when an accordion player (Patrick Harison) hollered at a young man with a violin under his arm (Jesse Kotansky). The two quickly realized they shared much musical ground and began playing, and soon after they were joined by Rich Stein (percussion), Jordan Scannella (bass), and Eva Salina Primack (vocals).
